Effect of Eutrophication Control Methods on the Generation of Greenhouse Carbon Gases in Sediment

The accumulation of nutrients (eutrophication) in water bodies generally produces increased concentrations organic matter that eventually are deposited sediment, and partially mineralized, generating greenhouse carbon gases (GHCG). application eutrophication control methods includes the phosphate adsorbing materials such as Phoslock (PHOS), hypolimnetic oxygenation systems (HOS). We evaluated generation GHCG sediment subject to these methods. Combined samples from Valle de Bravo reservoir Mexico, were incubated reactors, where following applied: HOS, PHOS, HOS + compared a reactor without treatment (CONTROL). Redox potential (Eh), pH, redox-sensitive ions, emissions monitored, observing rates: CONTROL (15.6 mmol m?2 d?1) > (12.8) PHOS (11.0) (9.7 d?1), with rate within values determined published core data. time Eh decreased, sulfate reduction increased. Application reservoir, would most probably result lower emission rates. This is due repression sulfate-reduction water-sediment applied both individually combined.
